Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the variations in water physicochemical parameters and their impact on the phytoplankton community in the culture ponds at the Shahid Sanati Goater site during the shrimp rearing period. In this study, temporal variations in water temperature, salinity, pH, turbidity, nitrate, phosphate, nitrite, and ammonia were investigated along with the abundance and diversity of phytoplankton communities in aquaculture ponds. Based on the obtained results from the inlet canals and culture ponds, water temperature ranged from 29 to 35.5°C, salinity from 10 to 42g/L and turbidity from 16 to 170 NTU. Concentrations of nitrate and phosphate were measured ranging from 0.53 to 2.58mg/L and 0.21 to 2.65mg/L, respectively and nitrite concentration ranged from 0.005 to 0.280mg/L and ammonia concentration from 0.001 to 0.188mg/L. Phytoplankton community analysis in the culture ponds revealed that the most prominent blooms were attributed to the cyanobacteria Phormidium sp. and Synechococcus sp., the diatoms Chaetoceros costatus, Navicula elegans, and Nitzschia closterium, and the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum. Correlation analysis results indicated a significant relationship between water temperature variations and the phytoplankton community composition (P<0.05). An increase in water temperature from 32 to 35.5°C led to a significant decrease in green algae density and a considerable increase in the cyanobacterial population (P<0.05). Based on the findings of this study, among the evaluated physicochemical parameters, water temperature was identified as a key factor driving the occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms in Litopenaeus vannamei culture systems.
