Abstract

Quantitative and qualitative changes in the kidney tissue of Caspian kutum fingerlings exposed to water salinity in the coastal and estuarine areas of the Caspian Sea were investigated. Three groups of fish weighing 0.5, 1 and 1.5 grams were treated for 10 days in the three natural environments of the river (fresh water), the estuary (ppt 6-7) and the coast of the Caspian Sea (ppt 11-12) in the Kiasher beach area. The area and diameter of glomerulus and Bowman's capsule were measured using Image Tool (2.0) software. The results of statistical analysis showed that in all treatments at 0 hour, there was no statistically significant relationship between salinity and the size of kidney tissue indices (P>0.05). 240 h after entering the three environments into the different salinities, the size of the kidney tissue indices significantly decreased (P<0.05) with the increase in salinity, so that these changes in 1 and 1.5g weight groups were significantly more than the 0.5g group (P<0.05). Qualitative changes, including a decrease in the width of proximal convoluted tubule and distal convoluted tubule after exposure to salinity, were observed in all three weight groups.
